The foundation of Carmen & Lucy Fine Jewellery is simple: love, courage, and a belief in building something lasting.
When it came to naming this business, I considered calling it Julia Louise — after myself. But I didn’t feel I had yet earned that honour. So I turned instead to the women whose influence and inspiration run deep — my grandmothers, Carmen and Lucy.
Both left their homelands in the 1960s — Carmen from Spain, Lucy from Cyprus — carrying little more than determination and hope for a better life. They arrived in Australia, far from the comforts of home, but with unshakable courage and faith in the future.
It was through their jewellery boxes that I first learned how powerful jewellery could be. A golden brooch gifted as an engagement present. Handwoven earrings from artisans long gone. Each piece carried a story, a memory, a piece of them.
As I grew older, my fascination deepened. I began jewellery night classes while studying marketing at university, but quickly realised the corporate path lacked the sense of purpose I was hoping for. When a role opened at a local handmade jeweller, I knew immediately it was the right path to take — and spent the next six years immersed in the craft. From custom design to gemstone sourcing, manufacturing techniques to modern technologies, I learned to create jewellery with precision and care.
My fascination with gemstones led me into formal study — practical gemmology, diamond grading, and advanced diamond grading with the Gemmological Association of Australia, followed by further training with the International Gemstone Society. Paired with years of hands-on experience, this gave me both the technical expertise and the creative freedom to craft jewellery that is as meaningful as it is enduring.
Jewellery here isn’t mass produced — it’s custom made, personal, and built to endure. Every bespoke piece carries the story of the person it was created for.
